The Historic Heart of Chiang Mai

Standing proudly in the center of the walled Old City, the Three Kings Monument (Anusawari Sam Kasat) is one of Chiang Mai’s most significant historical and cultural landmarks. This iconic bronze sculpture pays tribute to the three legendary monarchs who formed a sacred alliance to plan and establish the city of Chiang Mai as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom in 1296.

The monument features three figures:

• King Mengrai: The founder of Chiang Mai and the Lanna Kingdom, standing prominently in the center.
• King Ramkhamhaeng: The revered ruler of the Sukhothai Kingdom, positioned to Mengrai's right.
• King Ngam Muang: The ruler of Phayao, positioned to the left.

According to local lore, these three kings sealed their pact of eternal friendship by drinking sacred water mixed with their own blood, ensuring peace and mutual cooperation across their territories. Designed by the celebrated Thai national artist Kaimook Chuto, the 2.7-meter-tall bronze statues were unveiled in 1984.

A Vibrant Gathering Place and Cultural Hub

While the monument itself is not a towering colossus, its cultural significance is immense. The spacious public plaza surrounding the monument, known as "Khuang Three Kings," serves as the "zero kilometer" point of Chiang Mai. It is a popular meeting spot, a venue for local festivals (such as the vibrant Loy Krathong lantern displays), and a sacred site where locals regularly present offerings of flowers, incense, and candles to show their respect.

Directly behind the monument stands the elegant, former Provincial Hall, which has been beautifully restored and now houses the Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Centre—an excellent place to dive deeper into the region's rich history.

How to Visit

The monument is located in the very center of the Old City and is easily accessible on foot, by tuk-tuk, or via a red songthaew (passenger truck).

Opening Hours

The outdoor square and monument are open to the public 24 hours a day, making it a wonderful spot to visit both in the bright daylight and during the cooler evening hours when the statues are beautifully illuminated.
